Assessing and Managing Health Risks from Drinking Water Contamination: Approaches and Applications

چکیده
The hazards for humans and the environment are readily apparent in chemical emergencies. On the other hand, the risks from nongenotoxic effects of chronic exposures to low levels of chemicals are poorly understood. In particular, developmental toxicity studies should pay greater attention to the identification and biological evaluation of subtle effects as early indicators of damage and to the definition of doseresponse relationships and risk estimates, particularly the "benchmark" dose. In this present paper we briefly discuss two examples of subtle developmental alterations of the axial skeleton and the kidney which are induced by the herbicides Bromoxynil and Dinoseb, respectively.

Risk analysis of drinking water microbial contamination versus disinfection by-products (DBPs).
Managing the provision of safe drinking water has a renewed focus in light of the new World Health Organization (WHO) water safety plans. Risk analysis is a necessary component to assist in selecting priority hazards and identifying hazardous scenarios, be they qualitative to quantitative assessments. For any approach, acute diarrhoeal pathogens are often the higher risk issue for municipal wat...
متن کاملRisk Evaluation and Decision Support for Drinking Water Systems
Introduction The vital importance of a reliable and safe drinking water supply makes efficient risk management necessary for water utilities. Risks must be assessed and possible riskreduction measures evaluated to provide relevant decision support. The World Health Organization (WHO) emphasises the use of an integrated approach where the entire drinking water system, from source to tap, is cons...
متن کاملIsolation and Identification of Pathogenic Bacteria from Drinking Water
Drinking water microbiological quality was primarily determined by enumeration of “indicator organisms”, whose presence indicates faecal contamination. The presence of the indicators is often a key in assessing potential public health risks due to bacterial pathogens and is used in drinking water quality regulations and guidelines in many countries. The enumeration of fecal coliform specificall...
متن کاملPotential Effectiveness of Point-of-Use Filtration to Address Risks to Drinking Water in the United States
Numerous contemporary incidents demonstrate that conventional control strategies for municipal tap water have limited ability to mitigate exposures to chemicals whose sources are within distribution systems, such as lead, and chemicals that are not removed by standard treatment technologies, such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)/perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS). In these situations, point-of...
متن کاملApplication of a risk management system to improve drinking water safety.
The use of a comprehensive risk management framework is considered a very effective means of managing water quality risks. There are many risk-based systems available to water utilities such as ISO 9001 and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP). In 2004, the World Health Organization's (WHO) Guidelines for Drinking Water Quality recommended the use of preventive risk management app...
